Vincent was not crazy! It was very emotional and had a medical problem of the inner ear and can not suffer from undiagnosed epilepsy. But he was mad. S. Dali was mad as hatters and yet smart enough to know its own madness, can help to promote their art. Munch's work comes to mind when I look at your question, but their emotional problems, which (from depression, a kind of madness, I suppose). His work reflects a doubt the deepest thoughts about their concerns.
Van Gogh would be a good idea. Had, especially when his self-portraits show his ears has been cut by his own hand.
